CONGRATULATIONS GRADUATES

This Sunday, June 9, at the 9:00 a.m. service of worship we will recognize the members of the graduating class of 2002. The high school seniors will receive a New Oxford Annotated Bible. This Bible is used as a textbook in thousands of college classrooms - and it is great for personal study, too. Detailed annotations give essential information on specific biblical passages that will enable users to explore the world of the Bible with greater ease. The Bibles are gifts from the congregation with our most sincere congratulations and best wishes.

The class of 2002 includes – Amy Barton, Cheryl Bourne, Sean Bushong, Sara Chester, Emily Crates, Jon Davis, Megan Douglass, Amy Dunfee, Laura Goodman, Grant Hamlin, JJ Harrington, Karen Havens, David Hooper, Libby Huffman, Allision Klein, Jillian LaFave, Patrick Matheny, Anne McCormick, Rob Miller, Lindsay Poma, Julia Reid, Sally Scarbrough, Robert Stanfield III, Elizabeth Wagner and Chelsea Weck.

At the conclusion of the worship service, the seniors will be in the Narthex to receive your greetings. We raise prayers of thanksgiving for these seniors on their successful high school careers, and for their futures filled with God’s love and guidance!

WORSHIP HAPPENINGS

For Sunday, June 9, the Scripture readings are Matthew 9:9-13 and Genesis 12:1-5. The title for John Wurster’s sermon is "Go." The music leaders will be the Chancel Choir. Come let us worship God.

Fellowship Sundays

"We need more opportunities for our congregation to get together and discover each other, visit, and share ourselves." Over the last year, we have heard this comment from several people. It was a part of our mission study, and there is a continuing appeal for unstructured time to just gather and chat. Well, the Adult Education Committee has been listening to you and has taken these comments to heart. July 7 and August 4 will be Fellowship Sunday’s. Here will be the chance to grab a beverage of your choice, snitch a doughnut hole or two, munch on some fruit, sit down and visit, and maybe share some thoughts over a common issue. It is hoped that these relaxing conversations and shared moments will further enhance the feeling of community. Please come join us on these mornings.

SUMMER CHURCH SCHOOL BEGINS

Summer Church School for 2-year olds through senior highs will begin this Sunday, June 9, at 10 a.m. Two-year olds through Grade 2 will gather first in Room 107 for a fifteen-minute time of storytelling, music, and worship with Julie Betts. They then will be dismissed to age-appropriate classes. Students in Grades 3, 4, and 5 will meet in Room 114. Students in Grades 6, 7, and 8 will meet in Room 338. Senior Highs will meet in Room 332. Friends and guests are always welcome.

The lessons this summer for most of the classes will be about Joseph and Moses. Joseph was more than just some guy with a fancy coat, and Moses was more than a baby floating in a basket who grew up to do some spectacular stuff. Here’s your invitation to come learn in a more relaxed setting, get to see the Bible history in more detail, and see your friends. At the end of the summer, an intergenerational event about Moses will offer fun and learning for everyone. Set your Sunday calendars for August 25 for this special experience.

à A Second Chanceß

Several people told Pastor Bill that they were very interested in participating in the Creative Use of Differences workshop but couldn’t come May 15 and 22. For them AND FOR YOU, here is a second chance:

The Creative Use of Differences (Section B)

A workshop using the Myers-Briggs Type Indicator®

Sunday, June 30, 11 a.m. to 2:30 p.m.

Cost $5.00 for lunch

(Childcare will be available. Call the church office, 423-2112, at least 1 week in advance.)

At the end of the workshop participants will:

  • understand their psychological type and be able to use type concepts to appreciate their strengths and weaknesses.
  • know ways in which differences between people can be used positively.
  • see how a family, work group, or an entire congregation can be strengthened using type concepts.

To register, please call the church office by Friday, June 21.

THANK YOU

A deep heartfelt thanks goes to all those who gave generously to the Personal Care Item collection. The Open Arms/Domestic Violence Shelter, Hope House, CHOPIN Hall, Hancock County School children, City Mission and the Health Fairs will benefit from the overflowing boxes being sent to them.

Help in the Garden this Summer, Growing Young Faith that Bears Fruit.

We’d love to have your help with Whimsical Wednesdays for youth entering grades 3-8 this summer. The more, the merrier! Plentiful help makes each experience safer and happier for both children and adults. This is a great opportunity to get better acquainted with other adults and enjoy each other’s children. You can help make our church’s youth activities the top choice of our children. Individual jobs include attendance tracker, keeper of the coolers and first aid kits, leading games or singing on the bus, organizing food contributions, small group gatherer, phoning guru, and more. All activities will be on Wednesdays. Maybe you can plan to do it with a friend for more fun and teamwork. Please sign up on the main floor bulletin board where activities, dates, and times are indicated. Once you’ve signed up, we’ll call you about more details. Training will be available during the summer to help volunteers feel better about their readiness to work with youth in these settings.

Vacation Bible School

WOW! What a Good Time!

The high energy and fun-filled week of learning and sharing the Bible stories was an amazing experience. Children sang and danced, created artwork, gave generously for the mission project of art supplies and generally had a uproariously great time with John Wurster and Mallory the Gallery Mouse. Thanks to all the leaders and helpers and staff persons who made this week work so well and offered their gifts of spiritual support for our young people.

Top 10 Myths About Being a Great Volunteer Youth Worker

You must be able to act like one of the kids.

Playfulness, yes, acting like a big kid all of the time, no. We have plenty of kids and they have plenty of childish friends! What they do need are some loving, child-like adults who aren’t afraid of fun and will laugh with them. Some adults may not be so playful, yet are great at giving them a sympathetic ear, loving guidance, encouragement. You just might be one of these folks with a heart for connecting with youth. Not sure? You can try it out by volunteering and participating in volunteer learning opportunities this summer.

Grades 9-12

Weekly Bible studies at George House have begun on Thursdays, 7:30-9:00 p.m. Dig deeper into God’s Word to you. Wrestle with understanding the Bible’s origins, the challenges they pose for us, and why this awesome book has authority in our lives. Later in the summer we’ll tackle some new stuff you may not have considered before. We’ll gather and chat for the 1st half hour, then study and discussion will begin at 8:00. See you there!

Teen Challenge #1 Body Building (major athletic tendencies not required!)

Monday, June 24 6:30-9:00 p.m.

Church lawn near the bus, or Fellowship Hall in case of rain

First we’ll play an ancient game called "Tamuse" and then we’ll do a different kind of body building in a simulation game. If it seems like a vague description, you are right. We can’t reveal everything before you start! Come to see friends, experience something really different, and learn about yourself and the group.

PLEASE NOTE THE CHANGE!

Carwash only on June 15, 10 a.m.-2 p.m.

This is a great time for everyone to get wet while we all help earn some money for the work camp team! Location will be the parking lot or Food Town. We are still in negotiations. SAVE THE DATE and watch your youth newsletter or e-mail for the location.
