First Presbyterian Church
OUR VISION:
We are an active open
community of Christians seeking to know and glorify God,
nurturing all people and
sharing Christ’s love and teachings.
~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~
In
keeping with our theme, the program Sunday Evening, April 1, will be the
Findlay High School Freshman Show Choir, V.I.P.
Including instrumentalists, they number approximately 40 students and include five of our members: John Betts, Drew Dierksheide, Gary Flowers, William Linn and Stuart Reid. This week our meal will be a potluck. The Fellowship Committee will provide the turkey, beverages, and rolls. People with the last names of A-I are asked to bring a salad, J-R are to bring a hot side dish, and S-Z are to bring a dessert. Please make sure the dish will serve 6–8 people. The children will stay in Fellowship Hall to hear the VIP choir. There will be childcare for infants and pre-schoolers who do not want to stay to hear the choir. Come join us beginning at 6 p.m. as we celebrate life with friends, food, song and dance!
Farewell!!
A Farewell
Reception will be held at 10 a.m. in Fellowship Hall this Sunday, April 1, for
Jan Schultz as she concludes her time as Interim Christian Education
Director. The Christian Education
Co-Chairs will make a presentation on behalf of their committee and the
congregation. Jan will also be
recognized by the Adult Education and Spiritual Nurture Committees, on which
she has served. Come join in this
celebration of her ministry!
The Youth Ministry Committee is looking for two summer interns for 2001. Living Through Loss
“Death & The Effect on the Family
Unit”
After a death in a
family, the roles of family members change.
Sue Moore, a Social Worker with Bridge Home Health and Hospice, will
discuss how death effects the relationships within a family and how some
members may have to take on more responsibilities and new challenges. Anyone who has experienced a death loss is
warmly encouraged to join us on Monday, April 9, 2001, at 7:00 p.m. in
Fellowship Hall.
Hymnal
First Presbyterian Church will be hosting a very special concert on Sunday, April 8, at 3:00 p.m. and Monday, April 9, at 8:00 p.m
Jack
Taylor, Director of Bands at the University of Findlay, has composed a work for
concert band to mark his twenty years at the University. Because the work is based on great hymns of
the church year, he felt it would be appropriate to premiere the work in a
church. First Presbyterian Church was
chosen because of its commitment to the arts and because of its outstanding
pipe organ. Jane Van Valkenburg will
be playing our pipe organ, which will
be featured in the concert, and Marie
Louden-Hanes will serve as Narrator.
This
concert is free, but because standing-room-only audiences are expected for both
performances, tickets are being issued.
As the host, First Presbyterian Church is receiving a block of 100
tickets.
Tickets
will be at a premium for the Sunday afternoon performance. Parents of student band members who come
from out of town will find that performance time the most convenient for
them. Please consider attending the
Monday evening concert if at all possible.
If it is not, then reserve a ticket for Sunday afternoon.
Please
call the church office at 423-2112 to reserve your tickets by April 4.
PICTORIAL DIRECTORY
One-hundred, sixteen families/individuals have
signed-up for a sitting for a directory portrait. Have you? Scheduling
dates are: April 1,8 and 15. Sitting dates are: April 30, May 1, 2, 9, 10, 11 and 12.
Did you know that it takes every one of us to protect and preserve God’s green earth? Here’s an opportunity! The Church and Society committee needs YOU to help with our next Adopt-A-County-Roadway cleanup on Sunday, April 1, at 1:30 p.m. Bring your gloves and meet in the handicapped parking lot. God will be smiling!
CRUISING NORTH AFRICA
Come Join Us Tuesday, April 10, as we cruise along the coast of North Africa with Loren and Inez Senn.
Lunch will begin at noon in Fellowship Hall. Please make your reservations by noon on Monday, April 9, by signing the sheet outside the church office or by calling 423-2112. Don’t forget to bring $5.50 to cover the cost of your lunch. Make plans in your schedule now to participate in the visit to the Hayes Presidential Center in Fremont, Ohio, on May 8.
MOTHERS
AND CHILDREN of all ages, mark your calendar for Thursday, April 26 and plan to
attend the Annual Mother Child Banquet at 6:00 p.m. in Fellowship Hall. A great menu of ham loaf, augratin potatoes,
green beans almondine, tossed salad, cherry cheesecake, rolls, butter and
beverage will be offered for a nominal cost of $6.00 for adults and $3.00 for
children under 10 years of age. Following this delicious meal will be GREAT ENTERTAINMENT by
“Pantasia,” the unique steel drum band from the Findlay High School. So, all women, even if you don’t have a child,
please join us for a fun filled evening.
Reservations can be made by signing the sheet outside the church office
or by calling 423-2112 by April 19. We
must pay for any reserved meals that are not cancelled by April 26.
On Thursday, April 5, and Friday, April
6, the Hancock Christian Clearing House will be conducting a training session
for new volunteers. The training will
be held from 9:00 until Noon, and will be held at the First Christian Church on
North Main Street. If you are interested
in assisting in the mission of HCCH and would like more information, please
call 422-2222, and ask for Gene.
As is the
tradition of this congregation, we will adorn our sanctuary with lilies on
Easter morning. If you are interested
in providing a lily, please sign-up on the sheet outside the church office or
call 423-2112. Please purchase a lily
and have it delivered to the church before noon on Saturday, April 14.
Following the Easter Services, the lilies
will be delivered to those in the hospital, at home, or in nursing homes.
BE AWARE:
Presbyterian Women will be sponsoring the Salvation Army Soup Kitchen on
April 26 – more details to follow.
If anyone has borrowed or washed and not returned any of the church tablecloths, please return them so they may be used by others. Thank you!
2nd Pre-Marital Workshop
Announced for Saturday, May 5
One of our
requirements for couples who are getting married at FPC is pre-marriage
preparation, in the past accomplished by several counseling sessions with the
pastor. We believe that a workshop provides
a better way to do that preparation.
Our first such workshop occurred last September. We have arranged for the second Pre-Marital Workshop to be held here at the church on Saturday, May 5, 2001.
We have invited the couples whose weddings are already on the FPC calendar. But there may be some couples talking about marriage who would want to take advantage of this great opportunity to become better prepared for life together. They might want to know, for example, how to “nurture yourself while attending to the nurturing of your partner.”
Participation is open to other couples in the community. We will be contacting area churches to let them know of this great opportunity. Now you know it first. Please call Pastor Bill for a list of topics and other information.
A
total of 57 persons participated in the Tentmakers consultation to begin
development of a youth ministry management plan. Sean Nelson, Tentmakers Consultant, led participants through
tasks associated with developing a Mission Statement for Youth Ministry,
discussion on youth ministry philosophy, central concepts of a comprehensive
ministry to youth and their families, and organizational concerns.
Fifty
youth participated in a conversation with Sean on Sunday morning, during which
he asked the youth to identify some of their concerns. Those concerns were reported to the planners
during the Sunday afternoon session, as participants shared with one another
their hopes and dreams for the future of youth ministry in this congregation.
The
next step is to develop the plan based on the work just begun. All participants
in the Saturday and Sunday afternoon sessions are invited to work with the Tentmakers Planning Group (Steering
Committee) to develop the plan. Meetings
are scheduled for Tuesday, March 27, at 6:00 p.m. in Room 108 and Sunday
afternoon, April 1, from 4:00 to 6:00 p.m. in Room 108. The completed report with recommendations
will be presented to the Session for its consideration. Please remember the planners in your
prayers.
Our Holy Week worship will begin with a palm processional at the 9:00 a.m. worship service on April 8. Weather permitting we’ll gather near the elevator entrance portico and process up the hill by the Chapel. Some worshipers will assemble along the sidewalk as “spectators”, while others walk in solemn procession. Watch next week’s News and Views for details.
On Monday, Tuesday, and Wednesday, there will be mid-day Holy Week worship in the Chapel from 12:15 to 12:30 p.m.
Maundy Thursday worship will begin in Fellowship Hall at 6:00 p.m. with a meal prepared for the occasion. Following the fellowship, worshipers will process to the Sanctuary for a celebration of Holy Communion. The communion table will be placed in the chancel so that small groups may go into “an upper room” to celebrate the feast. The service will conclude with the stripping of the sanctuary.
The Good Friday service, at 7:00 p.m., will focus on the centrality of the cross, with scripture readings selected to help us comprehend what is good about Good Friday.
J
(just “J”) Bennett has been called to serve as part-time Temporary Young Adult
Program Coordinator, beginning this week.
J is a second year student at Winebrenner Theological Seminary, where he
is preparing for ministry. A graduate
of Washington University (BS in Electrical Engineering) and the University of
Michigan (MBA), J has a varied background in business and industry. Since
becoming a theological student, J has experience in clinical chaplaincy at
Flower Hospital and pastoral ministries at Messiah Lutheran in Toledo.
J’s
work with First Presbyterian will include support for our young adult
fellowship programs and campus ministry. As part-time staff he reports to the
pastor/head of staff and works with the Young Adult Ministry Committee of
Session.
Congratulations to Janin
and Chuck Miller of Bay Village,
Ohio, on the birth of Colton Jacob, March 20. Char and Mike Ebersole are Colton’s grandparents.
Sunday,
March 11, was a red-letter day in the City of Findlay. This was possible due to the fantastic
support that was received from so many churches, organizations and
individuals. The cooperation from the
entire community should make all of us proud and make us realize what can be
accomplished in the name of Christ.
When 4000 people participated in a Gospel Rock Concert, it proved what a
community and many churches working together is capable of doing. The management group for Rebecca St. James
was amazed that a community the size of Findlay could accomplish and support a
concert of this size. The real satisfaction
to all of us should be for the hundreds of people who were willing to dedicate
or rededicate their lives to Christ and for the hundreds of youth who were
willing to sign an Abstinence Pledge.
And for the many people who agreed to support a child through the
Compassion Ministry, and certainly to the little girl who stood at the
Compassion table explaining that she could not afford to sponsor a child, but
could she at least write to one! Again,
a very sincere “Thanks” for your efforts on behalf of this successful concert.
With less than 3 weeks to go, plans for the
Community Wide Easter Egg Hunt are coming together! Invitation flyers have gone out to all Findlay City School
YMCA, and area nursery schools, in hopes that we can bring children and their
families to our church to share in the joy of this event. Candy donations have been incredibly
generous and we ask that you continue to donate as you are able. If you are interested in volunteering the
