Reformation Sunday, October 29
We celebrate Reformation Day on the last Sunday of October, commemorating the beginning of the Protestant Reformation in 1517 when Martin Luther published his 95 points of dispute with the Roman Catholic Church. John Calvin (1509-1564), a Swiss theologian who became influenced by Luther’s reform, is considered to be the founder of Presbyterianism. Our worship services this Sunday will include prayers and hymns from Calvin and Luther. We look forward to seeing you this Sunday for worship.

It’s a Church Fair! Join us in the Great Room a week from Sunday for a celebration of our ministry and a look to the future. Come and see what’s happening across the church and consider how you might be a part of what God is doing in our midst. Beginning at 9:30 a.m., committees will have tables presenting the many aspects of our congregation’s life. There will also be a presentation of the opportunities ahead for us in 2007. It’s a time to see where we are and glimpse where we are headed as we continue to tell the story of God’s love in Jesus Christ.
Thank You!
Thanks to all the cookie bakers who supplied cookies for the college care packages sent out last week and to those who took a bit of time to help pack & label the cookies boxes. The biggest thank you goes to Karen Peschel for coordinating everything. Great job everyone!
2006 Operation Christmas Child
Spread the word of God’s love to children throughout the world. Last year over 7 million shoeboxes were collected and sent to children in nearly 100 countries, 24,000 of those shoeboxes came from Northwest Ohio. Brochures are available in the Narthex that can act as an aid when preparing a shoebox.
The collection period for our area will be from Monday, November 13 through Sunday the 19.
(Please note that our collection ENDS Sunday November 19, because the truck leaves early Monday morning, November 20, to transport our boxes to a checkpoint in Toledo.) Collections will take place in room 108 and can be made throughout the day. The collection center will be staffed from 5:30 to 7:30 p.m. Monday through Friday, 9 a.m. to 12 p.m. on Saturday, and 12 to 5 p.m. on Sunday. There is a sign up sheet in the hallway for those wanting to help with the collection site.Shoebox donations from our congregation should be placed on a windowsill in the Sanctuary. These donations can be made at anytime. The Church School classes will also participate – watch for details. Our gifts will be dedicated at the worship service on November 19.
Health Focus:
Secondhand Smoke
Throughout October, the Health Ministry of the church has shared information on the health risks of secondhand smoke. The November 7 election ballot will have two issues directly related to secondhand smoke. Given both the serious health ramifications and the potential for confusion between the issues, we offer the following information:
Issue 4:
Keeps smoking in restaurants and many public places.
Fails to protect hospitality workers from secondhand smoke exposure in their workplaces.
Will prevent any city or town from passing a local smoke-free law without first amending the state Constitution.
Endorsement campaign is paid for by the tobacco companies.
Issue 5:
Will make restaurants, public places and workplaces smoke free.
Is supportive of the Surgeon General’s Report, which says there is no safe exposure to secondhand smoke. It states it is a "serious health hazard" linked to cancer, lung disease, heart disease and "should be considered a significant pediatric issue."
Will protect all workers, families, children and seniors from the dangers of secondhand smoke.
Is supported by the American Cancer Society, the American Lung Association, the American Heart Association, Cleveland Clinic, BVRHC, Hancock Medical Society, The League of Women Voters, and more than 500 other organizations.
If you support Issue 5, you must vote NO on Issue 4 and YES on Issue 5
.
This message is sponsored by The Health Ministry of First Presbyterian Church. Responding to God’s gift of life, and our life in Jesus Christ, we seek to nurture health, healing and wholeness in body, mind and spirit in our church and community.
